One environmental risk to public health is air pollution. Per the World Health Organization (WHO) (n.d.), air pollution is contamination of the environment by any chemical, physical, or biological means which changes the natural characteristics of the atmosphere. Some common sources of air pollution are vehicles, forest fires, and industrial facilities. Particulate matter, ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide are pollutants of major public concern (World Health Organization, n.d.). According to Hunter (2020), air pollution even at levels within WHO guidelines causes cardiovascular damage, as well as affects immunity and metabolic conditions (p. 1).
